Street Law is proud to present its 2022 Community Champion Award to Wellspring Living, a non-profit organization in Atlanta, Georgia, that provides specialized recovery services to survivors of domestic sex trafficking. The award will be presented via a video to be released on May 3, 2022.
The Community Champion Award, a new annual award, is a way for Street Law to honor its community partners who integrate Street Law materials and methods into their direct service programming for vulnerable communities.
Wellspring Living’s programs provide transformative care through therapeutic services, education, life skills, and personal and professional development. The focus for each participant is on developing their courage to move forward and their confidence to succeed.
Since 2018, Wellspring Living has partnered with Street Law and The Home Depot to facilitate Street Law’s Legal Life Skills Program for Wellspring’s Women’s Academy. The Women’s Academy offers life-changing programming to young women who have experienced difficulty gaining living-wage employment due to life circumstances such as poverty, sexual abuse, and trafficking.
Street Law has trained staff at Wellspring Living, as well as volunteers from The Home Depot, to integrate Street Law programming into Wellspring’s regular slate of service delivery. Each week, Women’s Academy participants receive two hours of Street Law instruction to help them navigate a law-saturated society as independent adults. Their connection to positive role models from Street Law, Wellspring staff, and volunteers from The Home Depot helps to build their knowledge and confidence as they grapple with important legal lessons that can be new, challenging, or triggering to prior traumas.
“The content is engaging and the students thoroughly enjoy the topics,” says Tiffany Francis, Wellspring Living’s Career Coordinator and Apprenticeship Team Lead. “These presentations lead to community linkages that allow our students to apply for voter’s registration and open a bank account to transition towards self-sufficiency.”
Through Street Law’s Legal Life Skills Program, Wellspring participants learn about their rights during an arrest, how to navigate landlord-tenant law, and how to hold credit cards and loans in good legal standing. They come away from the program empowered to make positive changes in their own lives and in their communities.
“Understandably, law in today’s society can be intimidating,” says Tiffany Francis. “However, working with Street Law allows our participants to break down barriers and evolve while healing from past behaviors and traumas.”
Street Law is proud to partner with Wellspring Living, an immensely deserving recipient of the 2022 Community Champion Award.
