Volunteer Legal Experts Played Integral Role in the New Edition of the Street Law Textbook

Early this year, McGraw Hill Education printed the first copies of the 10th edition of Street Law: A Course in Practical Law. The seven-unit, 46-chapter text, which will begin appearing in high school classrooms across the country this spring, took most of 2019 to complete.
While the book is a result of the partnership between Street Law, Inc. and its longtime publishing partner, McGraw Hill Education, this enormous undertaking was only possible because of the many, many volunteer attorneys who freely gave their time and expertise to ensure the content was thorough, timely, and accurate.
For all things related to the Constitution we turned, as we always do, to Erin Murphy, a partner at the Washington office of Kirkland & Ellis and leading Supreme Court advocate. Erin also serves on Street Law’s Leadership Circle and is a regular contributor to Street Law’s case materials and teacher training on the Court.
Ilana Eisenstein, DLA Piper partner in the firm’s Philadelphia office, co-chair of their appellate practice, experienced Supreme Court advocate, and former federal prosecutor, took on the gigantic task of reviewing all the criminal law and procedure chapters. Ilana also supports our work training teachers in collaboration with the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
The torts unit was reviewed by Senior Counsel Kelly Koscuiszka and a team of associates from Schulte Roth & Zabel in New York. Kelly, who taught in the Street Law program as a law student at Georgetown, also helps support Street Law activity with the Charter High School for Law and Social Justice in the Bronx. She also serves on Street Law’s Leadership Circle.
A team of lawyers from Epstein Becker & Green helped with several key sections of the book. Carrie Valiant, a partner in the firm’s Washington office and member of Street Law’s board of directors, edited the lesson on health care law. Her New York-based colleagues, Susan Gross Sholinsky and Carrie Anderer, provided support for the extensive (and evolving) materials on employment law.
The entire family law unit was reviewed and edited by Naomi Cahn, the Harold H. Greene Professor of Law at George Washington University Law School. Professor Cahn is a leading scholar in this area and was helpful in picking up significant, recent changes in family law.
For the 10th edition, Street Law added a new chapter—environmental law. Creation of this chapter would have been impossible without the expert guidance of Amanda Cohen Leiter, professor of law and director of the Program on Environmental and Energy Law at American University’s Washington College of Law. A former Supreme Court clerk and current member of Street Law’s Leadership Circle, Amanda has helped Street Law with training sessions for law faculty in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Additionally, we’d like to thank legal experts Paul Bock, Erno L. Buky, Alene Garcia, Maureen Goble, Amy Hammer, Richard Katskee, Alan Korn, Joan Meier, Frances Mendez, Kevin Parton, Jenna Ruddock, Claudia Simons, Jacqueline Srour, Katherine Sullivan, and Amanda Wichot for their work on the new edition as well.
