Teaching About Immigration Law and Policy

In 2010, Street Law, Inc. teamed up with the American Immigration Council (AIC) to increase and improve immigration law and policy instruction in Long Island high schools.

This program—like most Street Law programs—connected teachers with content experts to enhance the teaching of law. Participating teachers from Central Islip and Patchogue-Medford High Schools were paired with immigration attorneys to co-teach lessons on immigration law and policy. Since the program’s launch, Street Law and AIC trained more than a dozen lawyer-teacher teams, who in turn taught over 500 students.

On November 19, 2013, students from these classes participated in a special forum where they applied their newfound knowledge of immigration law and policy and shared and exchanged ideas with their peers. The forum was composed of a series of interactive workshops on a variety of immigration topics, including the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, various visa programs, and the comprehensive immigration reform bill that is currently before Congress.
