Street Law’s Teacher Professional Development – On the Road

In February, Street Law staff members are leading professional development for social studies teachers in St. Louis, Washington, DC, and Maryland. In a workshop sponsored by the Missouri Bar, the Judicial Learning Center in St. Louis, the Federal Practice Memorial Trust, and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, Street Law will help teachers explore hot topics like immigration, gun control, student press, and judicial nominations through a lens focused on the Constitution and federal courts. Street Law will also train Maryland educators on three Supreme Court cases being added to the state curriculum. Finally, with the support of a generous anonymous donor, Street Law will provide professional development for Washington, DC, government teachers on integrating civic-skill building strategies and controversial issues in the classroom.

Street Law’s professional development programs are well-known for their focus on relevant, current, topics in law and government. We prepare teachers to lead skill-building activities in class without stealing time away from required content. Teachers who attend Street Law PD praise the classroom-ready materials, the use of legal experts, and the way they were treated like professionals throughout.

Street Law champions and teaches strategies that build students’ civic skills and get them to engage deeply with content. We prepare teachers to lead simulations of government processes, to engage students in effective discussion of controversial issues, and to help students analyze and work to solve public problems. All professional development programs are supported by a deep portfolio of classroom-ready materials that teachers can use and adapt immediately. We have a flexible approach to program design and work directly with schools and school districts to determine program length and content.
