Street Law Rolls out New Rule of Law Curriculum in Jordan

For the past five months, Street Law, Inc, has been working hard to develop and implement an Arabic language curriculum focused on the rule of law in Jordan. Today, that hard work has come to fruition with the completion of the first, week-long training.

The project kicked off last Thursday and will run for two weeks total. Over 60 Jordanian teachers, professors, government officials, and NGO leaders will participate in a week-long training in the curriculum, led by Street Law’s Director of International Programs Ben Perdue, and Bebs Chorak, a former Street Law director and current consultant.

The curriculum, developed by Street Law in cooperation with a group of Jordanian legal and educational professionals, is designed to make lessons applicable and relevant to Jordanian young people and increase their knowledge, skills, and attitudes around the rule of law.

Some of the training involves analyzing hypothetical scenarios about rule of law, acting out mini moot court scenarios, participating in activities like Take a Stand, and holding a legislative hearing on whether smoking should be banned in restaurants.

After the curriculum is implemented, Dr. Peter Levine will help conduct a rigorous evaluation of the outcomes of the classes, which will support the expansion of a locally relevant and tested curriculum throughout the country.

To implement this project, Street Law partnered with the Arab World Center for Democratic Development United for Human Rights and Democracy (UniHRD), and received financial support from the German Federal Foreign Office.
