Street Law Launches Three New Sites in California

Street Law is excited to work alongside Netflix to strengthen their investment in Black youth and communities. This investment brings Street Law three new partnerships in school and community-based organizations to expand the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline and Legal Life Skills Programs.

The Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program targets young people from groups that are underrepresented in the legal profession to provide legal education and career pathway information. The Legal Life Skills Program targets those who are most vulnerable to racism and injustice to provide them with legal knowledge and skills needed to advocate for themselves and their communities.

We’re launching two Legal Life Skills programs, the first in Oakland with the Student Program for Academic and Athletic Transitioning (SPAAT), a community-based organization with a mission to educate and prepare student athletes from underprivileged backgrounds. The site is launching in partnership with students from McClymond’s High School.

“This program is so important for our SPAAT student-athletes at McClymonds because we lay the groundwork for them to be ready for success in college, careers and life beyond sports,” said Harold Pearson, co-founder & CEO of SPAAT. “Participating in the Street Law and Netflix program allows them to gain critical information and real-world experiences that will ensure they will be ready to achieve success at whatever they choose to do in life.”

The second site is launching with Los Angeles based community organization, the Brotherhood Crusade. Brotherhood Crusade is a 50-year-old grassroots community-based organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life and meet the unmet needs of low-income, underserved, under-represented and disenfranchised individuals.

Our third site takes place in Los Angeles where Street Law has partnered with STEM magnet school Crenshaw High School to launch a new Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline site. Because Crenshaw High School has a student body population of approximately 69% Black and 29% Latinx, it’s an ideal place to expose a diverse group of students to the law and legal careers.

“I am thrilled about our new partnership with Netflix,” said Street Law Executive Director Ashok Regmi. “Street Law, will work closely with our community partners, schools, and Netflix staff to achieve a common goal of unlocking the agency of young people in underserved communities.”
