Street Law was thrilled to join thousands of teachers and administrators here in Washington, DC, for the NCSS Annual Conference in early December!
Our staff presented two workshops and a poster session, in addition to hosting a sold-out pre-conference visit to the Supreme Court. Executive Director Lee Arbetman led an exploration of the coming U.S. Supreme Court term and dove into a current case about freedom of religion—Trinity Lutheran v. Pauley. Chief Program Officer Megan Hanson and guest expert Ishan Bhabha helped teachers investigate the exclusionary rule and discuss the Fourth Amendment in the context of the digital age. Both sessions distributed classroom-ready materials on these topics, which are available online for attendees and those who could not make it!
Lena Morreale Scott and Yolanda Johnson held a poster session on our newest curriculum, Street Law for Police & Teens, designed to be co-taught by law enforcement officers and teachers.
As a proud member of the Civics Renewal Network, Street Law also participated in the Network’s session on sure-fire ways to teach civics, by promoting our Supreme Court Greatest Hits—23 of the most popular case summaries on our website.
We were thrilled by how many people approached our booth with the words, “I loooove Street Law!” Many of these individuals have taught lessons using Street Law materials, used one of our textbooks in the classroom (e.g., Street Law: A Guide to Practical Law), participated in one of our teacher professional development programs, or used our materials on LandmarkCases.org.
Past participants in our annual Supreme Court Summer Institute came by the booth to visit with Institute instructors Megan Hanson and Lee Arbetman. One former participant from Texas spoke about how her SCSI experience significantly expanded her understanding of how diverse the USA truly is. Other teachers told us that years later, the Institute still impacts their teaching and they continue to use the strategies and materials they learned about.
