12 Corporations Celebrate 10 Years of Street Law Service

In 2001, Tom Sager, then general counsel of DuPont, wanted to do something to address the lack of diversity in the legal profession. He approached the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and challenged them to design an initiative that would encourage young high school students of color to pursue legal sector careers. ACC reached out to Street Law, known for creating law-related education programs for young people, and the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program was born.

The Legal Diversity Pipeline Program exposes young people from diverse communities to everyday law and legal careers. With the goal of encouraging more young people of color to consider a legal career, the program uses volunteer legal professionals to deliver lessons about the law, engage the students in interactive simulations, and serve as role models and advisors.

In 2001, the McDonald’s Law Department came on board as the first Legal Diversity Pipeline Program pilot site. Today, more than 70 corporate law departments, ACC chapters, and law firms participate. Last year approximately 1,800 legal community volunteers taught more than 5,000 diverse high school students about law and pathways to careers in the legal profession through this program.

A common theme of the Pipeline Program sites is the steadfast commitment they have to the program’s mission and the young people it serves. Street Law is excited to spotlight the following 12 corporations that have been active in the program for 10 years or more. Thank you for your service!
