Street Law is proud to present its 2023 Corporate Champion Award to Warner Bros. Discovery. The award will be accepted by Savalle Sims, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, at the Street Law Awards Gala on April 20.
The Corporate Champion Award recognizes corporate Street Law partners with an exemplary commitment to making positive change in their communities. The award also honors companies whose employees have chosen to volunteer their time and other resources in support of Street Law’s mission.
The recently-formed Warner Bros. Discovery has only been in existence since April 2022, but the company’s deep Street Law roots can be traced back much further. Two entities now under the company’s umbrella—Discovery, Inc. and WarnerMedia—have both been longstanding Street Law partners.
For many years, Street Law and Discovery’s headquarters were located next door to each other in Silver Spring, Maryland. United by a shared goal to give back to their local communities, Discovery and Street Law teamed up in 2016 to implement Discovery’s first Legal Diversity Pipeline Program cycle. Sims, who was earlier the General Counsel at Discovery, served for more than three years on Street Law’s Board of Directors. She played an integral role in deepening the company’s strong commitment to advancing diversity in the legal profession and empowering young people to navigate a law-saturated society. Likewise, WarnerMedia—now also part of the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella—began supporting the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program over a decade ago and was long one of Street Law’s cornerstone partners.
In the years since their Legal Diversity Pipeline involvement began, legal professionals from Warner Bros. Discovery have—upon receiving curricula and training from Street Law—volunteered to teach hundreds of young people from under-resourced backgrounds about everyday legal concepts, while also encouraging them to enter the legal profession.
Warner Bros. Discovery has expanded its involvement in the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program by working with a high school near its current New York headquarters. The Warner Bros. Discovery volunteers visit the High School for Language and Innovation in the Bronx each year to teach students about law and legal careers, affording the young people a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of the law and be inspired by the numerous career opportunities many did not know were available.
“We are so proud of our long history of partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery,” says Ashok Regmi, Street Law’s CEO. “We are both steadfast in our focus on advancing justice and empowering all people to positively transform their world. I am thrilled that we are honoring them at this year’s Awards Gala.”
Sims added: “In theory it is the employees of Warner Bros. Discovery—and the legacy organizations that comprise our new organization—who are volunteering to make a difference, when in reality we are as positively impacted and engaged as the students we are fortunate enough to meet. We are extremely proud of our partnership with Street Law and look forward to continuing to advance our shared commitment to empower young people with legal knowledge and also an understanding of opportunities to engage in civic life.”
Because of its strong dedication to making positive change and advancing justice, Warner Bros. Discovery is an exceptional Street Law partner and a deserving recipient of Street Law’s 2023 Corporate Champion Award.
