Street Law’s teacher professional development team recently led three teacher trainings in Fairfax, VA, Prince George’s County, MD, and Madison, WI.
The Fairfax training on August 22nd reached 97 secondary social studies teachers. Cathy Ruffing presented a workshop on case study strategies (see Street Law’s new resource on the topic). Jen Wheeler presented a workshop on how to use deliberations to conduct civil conversations about polarizing topics.
On August 29th, the Street Law team worked with 23 teachers to support instruction around using sources in a government or law classroom. The session included a look at how the McGraw-Hill textbook co-authored by Street Law, Inc., United States Government: Our Democracy, can support instruction using sources, and how sources from the textbook can be integrated into deliberations of controversial topics. Of the training, one teacher said, “This seminar left me more prepared … for teaching sources, collaborating, and careful reading.”
On September 22nd, Cathy Ruffing traveled to Madison to participate in the University of Wisconsin’s “Teaching about the 2018 Elections” professional development seminar. She presented two sessions: Teaching about Gerrymandering Using Hershey’s Kisses, and Using Supreme Court Case Studies to Teach about Elections. The conference was attended by practicing teachers, pre-service teachers, and undergraduate education students.
