The 2018 Excellence in Service Award will be proudly presented to Capital One at Street Law’s annual Awards Dinner on April 25, 2018. The Excellence in Service Awardrecognizesthe volunteer efforts of companies, law firms, and organizations that provide exceptional community service in the form of a Street Law program.
Capital One legal department’s outstanding participation in two Street Law programs—the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program and Legal Life Skills for Youth—make them an incredibly deserving recipient of this year’s award.
Capital One’s partnership with Street Law began in 2015, when the company joined the network of corporations that participate in the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program. This program encourages young people of color to pursue legal careers, connects students with legal professionals, and offers youth the law-related knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to bring about positive change for themselves and others.
Through this program, volunteers from the Capital One legal department visit social studies classes at Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia, and lead interactive workshops that teach young people about contracts, copyright law, and advertising law.
As with all of Street Law’s Legal Diversity Pipeline Programs, the program culminates in an interactive Legal Careers Conference where Capital One hosts the students from Armstrong High School at its headquarters for a day. During that day-long summit, students have a chance to showcase the knowledge they acquired over the course of the semester with team events and discussions.
Moreover, Capital One volunteers work with students on understanding their personal brand, the importance of technology, and other similar skillsets designed to give prepare young people for college and the workforce. Legal professionals from Capital One provide open question and answer sessions with students about high school, college, and work in the legal profession.
In 2017, Capital One expanded its partnership with Street Law and the local Richmond community by establishing a Legal Life Skills for Youth program at Girls for a Change, a local community-based organization. Equipped with a training and curricular materials from Street Law, volunteers lead participants through a series of interactive practical law lessons. These lessons boost knowledge, build skills, and help under-resourced young people become empowered adults.
Street Law is delighted to recognize Capital One’s commitment to their community with the 2018 Excellence in Service Award.
