Strengthening Street Law in Russia

Street Law staff trained a group of Russian law professors in interactive teaching strategies and other best practices during their August 2014 visit to Washington, DC.

Street Law, Inc. is helping to build and strengthen several law school-based Street Law programs throughout Russia. We’ve partnered with the Russia-based Center of Development of Legal Clinics and the D.C. Street Law Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center to implement an exchange program between Russian and U.S. law schools that prepares law students to teach about practical law, rule of law, and civic engagement in their local communities. This program was made possible by a grant through the U.S. Embassy in Moscow’s Peer-to-Peer Dialogue (P2P) program.

In August, law professors from the following Russian law schools visited Washington, DC, to participate in Georgetown University Law Center’s annual Street Law training:

  • North Arctic Federal University (Arkhangelsk)
  • Chechen State University (Grozny)
  • Moscow State University (Moscow)
  • Tomsk State University (Tomsk)
  • Ural State Legal University (Ekaterinburg)

Participating law professors learned how to launch Street Law programs at their universities and how to prepare their law students to teach practical law lessons in local high schools.

The Russian team collaborated to develop a civic engagement lesson on gun ownership (a hot topic in Russia) using the “Take a Stand” method—one of Street Law’s trademark strategies. The technique provides an effective, engaging way to structure a discussion on a controversial issue. It helps participants express their opinions, listen to other opinions, examine the consequences of potential positions, and formulate a more informed opinion on a topic.

Since August, Street Law staff have continued to advise and support the Russian law professors in their efforts. The group has enthusiastically moved forward in creating lesson plans for their students and taking all the necessary steps to ensure successful programs at their universities.

Law professors from the Georgetown program and Street Law staff will join the Russian team in Moscow in spring 2015 to continue to learn from each other and to showcase the work of the Russian law school programs.
