NEW YORK, NY –August 20, 2012 – The International Trademark Association (INTA), Street Law, Inc., and Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) are pleased to announce a joint partnership to bring Unreal, a campaign to educate teenagers about trademarks and anticounterfeiting, into high school classrooms around the United States.
During this partnership, INTA volunteers will work closely with Street Law and CRF staff to develop a trademark-related curriculum. Through Street Law and CRF’s extensive network of schools and educators, INTA volunteers will be paired with classroom teachers to co-teach trademark law classes to high school students during school hours. Additionally, webinars will be developed and made available to both volunteers and teachers who are interested in presenting the topic to their own local schools. In the end, INTA, Street Law, and CRF hope that students are able to broaden their understanding of trademarks and the harms of counterfeiting and to fuel their interest in a career in trademark law.
“Street Law and CRF are important partners in fulfilling our goal to help teenagers understand how trademarks relate to their everyday lives,” said Alan Drewsen, Executive Director of INTA. “Our trademark law expertise coupled with the educational experience provided by these partner organizations is a perfect combination for getting the information about the benefits of trademarks and the potential health, safety and economic risks in purchasing fake goods to high school classrooms.”
This partnership fulfills a key goal of INTA’s Unreal campaign. In addition to engaging teens at special events and through social and digital media, INTA hopes to offer them the opportunity to have in depth discussions with experts about trademarks, anticounterfeiting and careers in trademark law and enforcement.
“Involving INTA members in the classroom will bring the subject of intellectual property law to life for young people,” said Street Law Executive Director Lee Arbetman. “Additionally, the participation of intellectual property attorneys will be especially helpful in that they can provide expertise in a content area that isn’t commonly taught and can be challenging for teachers.”
For Street Law, Inc. and CRF, this initiative will fall under their Educating About IP program, which educates young people about the role and importance of intellectual property in society and the laws and policies in place to protect both the property and the citizens who use it.
